"But most said, 'We don't think you're good enough.' That was a mistake on their part I guess."ĭak Prescott redshirted in 2011 and saw limited action in 2012 – primarily in short-yardage and goal-line situations. "A few schools offered," Guin said, who accompanied Prescott on his first visit to Starkville, Mississippi. The Bulldogs had a head start on Dak, and he rewarded them with a commitment. Mississippi State and head coach Dan Mullen weren't a part of that group. But Prescott's numbers just didn't add up for most. His final two years with the Buccaneers produced 5,000 passing yards and more than 80 touchdowns. The quarterback may be on the verge of a national breakthrough now, but for most of his time at Haughton, there was no recruiting frenzy. Guin spent the summer prior to Dak Prescott's senior year traveling to football camps around the South. In the often callous business of college football recruiting, it's all about metrics and performance at camps. "He did everything the right way, everywhere he went. Any teacher on our campus would have said that. "He's just a good person - doesn't matter if he's a good football player or not," Guin said. Those are what I believe sets him apart to this day."įirst downs and touchdowns aren't the only reasons Prescott is beloved in these parts. "You could see his leadership capabilities then. "He threw a pass to win the middle school district championship," said Guin, who coached all three Prescotts.

He knew another talent Prescott was headed his way. More than a decade ago, a masterful performance from Dak Prescott, then in the eighth grade, had Guin licking his chops. In doing so, Saturday would serve as a national coming out party for the former Buccaneer. Saturday, Dak and his Bulldogs will aim for a victory. (Haughton High) Coach (Rodney) Guin - anybody who helped me get in this position." "Also for my grandmas, aunts, uncles, dad and friends. "The mind-set I had when I was 17 and 18 wasn't the mind-set you needed to be successful. "I wasn't ready for that life," Tad said. The older brothers had the talent and the promise, but their careers are now over. Not by any means.ĭak is the youngest of a football playing Prescott trifecta (Jace, who played at Northwestern State, is the middle brother). Ten months ago, the Prescotts lost their Queen Bee, Peggy, to colon cancer during the middle of Dak's sophomore season.įor Dak, every subsequent first down, touchdown and trying moment was dedicated to Peggy. He committed to play in Starkville, Mississippi, and stayed true to his word – in Haughton style – even though bigger-named schools such as LSU made a push in the 11 th hour.Ĭlassic small-town hard work and perseverance led to an opportunity for Dak to lead the Bulldogs. Mississippi State was on the 6-foot-2, 229-pound dual threat early. Despite Dak's success with the Buccaneers, major colleges didn't come calling – well, not at first.
